Description

What is Dutasteride 0.5mg?

Dutasteride 0.5mg capsules are a prescription-only treatment for male pattern baldness. Dutasteride is also available as the branded Avodart — both contain the same active ingredient at the same dose and are clinically equivalent. It is licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but widely used off-label by hair loss specialists.

How does it work?

Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes, which are responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. By suppressing approximately 90% of DHT (compared to approximately 70% with Finasteride), it more powerfully reduces the hormone that causes follicle shrinkage and hair loss.

Dutasteride vs Finasteride

  • Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase; Finasteride inhibits type II only
  • Dutasteride achieves approximately 90% DHT suppression vs approximately 70% with Finasteride
  • May produce greater hair loss benefit, particularly for those who have not responded to Finasteride
  • Longer half-life — remains in the body longer after stopping treatment

How to take it

Take one capsule once daily, whole (do not crush or break), with or without food, at the same time each day.

How long does it take to work?

Most men notice stabilisation of hair loss within 3–6 months of daily use, with peak hair growth typically achieved at 2 years. Stopping treatment leads to a reversal of benefits within 9–12 months.

Who should not take Dutasteride?

  • Women
  • Anyone under 18
  • People with liver problems
  • People with urinary retention issues or prostate issues
  • Anyone allergic to Dutasteride, soya, peanuts, or its components
