What is Dutasteride 0.5mg?

Dutasteride 0.5mg capsules are a prescription-only treatment for male pattern baldness. Dutasteride is also available as the branded Avodart — both contain the same active ingredient at the same dose and are clinically equivalent. It is licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but widely used off-label by hair loss specialists.

How does it work?

Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes, which are responsible for converting testosterone into DHT. By suppressing approximately 90% of DHT (compared to approximately 70% with Finasteride), it more powerfully reduces the hormone that causes follicle shrinkage and hair loss.

Most men notice stabilisation of hair loss within 3–6 months of daily use, with peak hair growth typically achieved at 2 years. Stopping treatment leads to a reversal of benefits within 9–12 months.
